Wade Fishing Paradise in Port Aransas

Get ready to slip on those waders and hit the flats of Port Aransas for some of the best inshore fishing Texas has to offer. Our full-day wade fishing trip in the Upper Laguna is the real deal for anglers looking to get up close and personal with trophy trout and redfish. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, we'll put you on the fish and show you why Port A is a top-rated destination for shallow water action.

What's the Deal?

Picture this: You're knee-deep in crystal clear water, the sun's just peeking over the horizon, and there's a tailing redfish 30 yards ahead. That's how we kick off our days on the flats of Port Aransas. This full-day trip is all about getting you into the thick of it – no sitting on a boat all day here. We're talking hands-on fishing in some of the most productive waters in the Coastal Bend. Our expert guides know these waters like the back of their hand and will have you casting to feeding fish before you can say "tight lines."

Wading 101

If you've never been wade fishing before, don't sweat it. We'll get you set up with everything you need, from top-notch waders to the perfect rod and reel combo. We typically use light tackle spinning gear, but if you're handy with a baitcaster, we've got those too. As for bait, we're flexible – we can sling artificial lures all day or use live bait if that's more your speed. The Upper Laguna is known for its grass flats and sandy potholes, which are like buffet lines for big trout and reds. We'll teach you how to read the water, spot the signs of feeding fish, and make that perfect presentation to entice a strike.

Why Anglers Can't Get Enough

There's something special about wade fishing that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the thrill of feeling that redfish brush past your leg as it chases down your lure. Or perhaps it's the satisfaction of sight-casting to a big trout and watching it inhale your topwater. Whatever it is, our clients tell us time and time again that there's nothing quite like it. The Upper Laguna of Port Aransas offers world-class fishing in a stunning setting – it's no wonder it's a customer favorite.

Fish You'll Want to Hook

Speckled Seatrout: These spotted beauties are the crown jewels of Texas inshore fishing. In the Upper Laguna, we're talking about fish that can push well over 25 inches. Specks love to hang around grass beds and drop-offs, ambushing bait fish and shrimp. The best time to target big trout is typically in the cooler months, from late fall through early spring. There's nothing quite like the subtle 'thump' of a big trout inhaling your lure – it's a feeling that'll get your heart racing every time.

Redfish: Reds are the bulldogs of the flats, and in Port A, they grow big and mean. We're talking about fish that can top 40 inches and put up a fight that'll test your drag and your stamina. Redfish are year-round residents, but the fall months are prime time when they school up for their annual spawn. Watching a group of reds churning up the water as they feed is a sight you won't soon forget. And when you hook into one? Hold on tight – these copper-colored brutes will make you earn every inch of line.

Southern Flounder: While not as glamorous as trout or reds, flounder are prized for both their fight and their flavor. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, blending in perfectly with the sandy bottom. Targeting flounder requires a different approach – a slow, dragging retrieve that mimics a wounded baitfish. The fall run, when flounder move to the Gulf to spawn, is the best time to target these tasty fish. Landing a big flounder is like unwrapping a present – you never know how big it is until you get it to the surface.

Time to Wet a Line

Look, if you're itching for a fishing trip that'll give you stories to tell for years to come, our Port Aransas wade fishing adventure is just the ticket. We're not just offering a day on the water – we're giving you a shot at some of the best inshore fishing Texas has to offer. Whether you're looking to land that gator trout of a lifetime, tangle with a bull red, or just enjoy a day surrounded by the natural beauty of the Coastal Bend, we've got you covered. Don't let another season slip by without experiencing the magic of wade fishing in Port A. Give us a call, and let's get you on the water. The fish are waiting, and the tide's just right – what are you waiting for?

Learn more about the species

Redfish

Redfish are one of our most popular targets here in Port A. These bronze beauties love the shallow flats and usually run 20-30 inches, though trophy bulls can push 45 inches. You'll spot them tailing in water so shallow their backs are out. They hang around oyster reefs, grass beds, and muddy bottoms. Reds will eat just about anything when they're hungry. I like throwing gold spoons or scented soft plastics. Their hard-pulling fight and excellent table fare make them a favorite. Fall is prime time as they school up to spawn. My top tip: look for "nervous water" or mud boils to find feeding reds. Once you hook one, get ready for some drag-screaming runs. There's nothing like sight-casting to a big red cruising the flats.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea trout, also called speckled trout, are a blast to catch here in Port Aransas. These silvery fish usually run 14-24 inches and put up a great fight. You'll find them hanging around grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. In winter, they school up in deeper channels. Sea trout love to hit artificial lures - jerk baits and topwater plugs are my go-to's. They're also known for their tasty, flaky white meat. Just be careful not to overcook it or it'll get mushy. Fall and spring are prime seasons when the water temps are right. One trick I like is trolling slowly along grass edges if they're being stubborn. The bite is usually best on a moving tide. Nothing beats the thrill of a big speck blowing up on a surface lure at dawn.

Southern Flounder

Southern flounder are the ninjas of our local waters. These oddball flatfish have both eyes on one side and can change color to blend in with the bottom. They typically run 15-18 inches but can reach over 30. You'll find them lurking on sandy or muddy bottoms in bays and estuaries. Flounder are ambush predators, so fishing slowly along drop-offs or creek mouths is the ticket. They're not the strongest fighters, but their unique looks and delicious white meat make them worthwhile. Fall is the best time as they migrate offshore to spawn. Here's a local secret: try drifting with a live mullet or bull minnow on a Carolina rig. When you feel that distinctive "thump," give them a second to swallow before setting the hook. Flounder gigging at night is another fun way to target these tasty flatties.
